Fishing
I went fishing just once in my life. I was 17, and 2 people asked if I would like to join them on an overnight fishing trip. Since the fishing spot was in the deep woods, we put got the needed equipment together. Guns and ammo, a tent, beer, and last and least, the fishing gear.
They explained how fishing works. The best time was very early in the morning, and they knew a good spot. In the evening we had a few beers, some target practice, and turned in.
I woke up about 2:30 in the morning, and woke both the other guys. Neither one was interested in moving just yet. I got a tackle box and a fishing rod and went to the fishing spot. I tried casting a few times with a lure. If that didn't work I put it back in the box and tried another one.
When a fish bit I pulled it in. I didn't like to see it flopping around so I hit it hard on the back of the head with a club to put it out of its misery. I caught 2 or 3 more before the other guys came out and they caught a couple too, but mostly by then the fish weren't there, or weren't biting.
I didn't really care for it, and never went fishing again. A lot of years later I was living in cottage country and a neighbor invited me to go fishing. I went with some alcohol since we enjoyed talking and drinking. (Not a good way to waste time, but that was what I did.) No fishing equipment for me though.
He caught a fish and undid the hook from the fishing line, then attached it to a short line tied to the boat. This kept the fish alive in the water so it wouldn't spoil. When no more fish bit at that location he pulled the line out of the water and flopped the fish in the boat, started the motor and went to another spot, then threw the fish back into the water, still wiggling and still alive. Did it all again when that spot didn't work out.
I did mention when I was younger that having a hook in the mouth of a fish might not be a very enjoyable experience for the fish. "Naw, it doesn't hurt them," I was told. The attitude was sort of "that's what they're made for." If they could not think of having a hook into the roof of your mouth and/or through your jaw and then being dragged by it as a painful experience, it didn't seem like they were rational enough to bother trying to go somewhere that made sense with the conversation, so I didn't bother.
But what do you think?
