A prison program that works
The normal rate of return to jail for convicted inmates is very high. Here is a quote from an article at msn.com. "About 700,000 inmates are released from state and federal prison each year. Of those released, about two-thirds re-offend within three years."
One program has cut that rate of return dramatically at the Fabian Dale Dominguez State Jail in San Antonio. Here is a link about that part. It is a video interview in Spanish, but there is an English transcript below. Univision Channel 41 "News of the Day" in San Antonio Texas.
Here are 2 quotes from the transcript.
"Guard: Of more than 700 offenders who have gone through the program, only 3 have returned. This is a really low number, said the official. According to Dept. of Justice statistics the usual return rate is more than 50%."
"Reporter: This Peace Education Course will continue being administered at Dominguez State Jail. It does not count toward any credits toward any conditional freedom: it is only for personal growth."
That is a good way to do it. Not everyone will be interested in it, in jail or out.
Some of the staff at the prison also became interested in the program.
"After his own experience and seeing the enthusiasm of inmates, many of whom have written to Prem Rawat expressing their gratitude, Captain Carter sent TPRF a letter praising the program and inviting Prem Rawat to speak at the prison.
'The Administration here would love to have him,' he said. 'Whenever he’s ready, we’d welcome him here and put the word out for him to give his speech to our whole population — which is 2,200 offenders at this time. All we’re waiting for is a date.'"
Here is the page with Captain Carter's video interview about it.
About TPRF’s Peace Education Program.
Since that page was put up, he did visit the prison and speak there.
After speaking he answered questions and expressions. A couple of them are on this page.
The peace that he is talking about is not something trivial or about becoming a vegetable. It includes feeling complete, content, happy, fulfilled.
"Within you is the most amazing feeling you can possibly imagine.
All that you look for, that you have looked for all your life, has always been right inside of you.
When you look inside, you will find the joy that you have always desired.
This is a gift that you have, and I can show you a way to get in touch with it." Prem Rawat
Videos of him speaking are at wopg.org. This is something completely different and it takes listening to understand the direction it goes. If a person does understand and decides that they want it, The Keys are available to enable the experience.
The prison program is just a small part of the tprf.org activities. It is a registered non profit organization that gets 4 out of 4 stars from Charity Navigator.
