Problems with bicyclists
After I get to work, one of the things I do is security. It is noticeable that some bicyclists are among the most difficult people to deal with. If they didn't bring a lock for their bike, a couple of them thought that made me responsible for watching it until they got back, and one of them just wouldn't take no for an answer, but went to my supervisor to complain.
If she had known that only made me look good, she probably wouldn't have bothered. Bikes aren't allowed in this building, but try to stop someone bringing a bike in and you could be in for energetic opposition. That's only a small sample of the encounters.
I was wondering if it was just my luck so I brought the topic up with 2 people I work with. They both agreed emphatically. "Yes bicyclists are the worst!" Maybe it's because they are in better shape so when they are in a bad mood they have more energy to put behind it? Or could it be because some of the lower class of cyclists are so used to being at least slightly immune to the rules of the road that they are upset when any rules at all are thought to apply to them?
They might be more independent than most people, since bicycling is still an unusual way to commute. Maybe it is just because they like to think for themselves.
That's about all I could come up with thinking about it. Of course 3 people aren't a majority on the planet, but I've run into the attitude enough on that job and it seems that I see it in bicycle forums once in awhile.
Of course a lot of bicyclists are the best people you would ever want to meet. Here are some of the things I like about general bicycle forum attitudes.
They can all read. Yes!
They tend to get up early for the commute.
The word frugal doesn't usually have contempt attached. Maybe they are more aware of income and expenses since bicycling makes financial sense.
They aren't super lazy. I was sharing a house with 2 people who were recently and that led to quite a few problems. As an example of the lazy part, they once started up a large car to go to a Dairy Queen 200 yards away. Lazy takes a car when enthusiastic wouldn't.
